I was thinking about that a lot over the weekend, in part because of the designers here who, like Ms. Apfel, have built empires (or at least small fiefs) on a willingness to go their own way — Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto. Designers with a deep understanding of the rules and history of fashion and an equally powerful ability to rewrite both, and to imagine a different world. One whose uniforms can look bizarre and outrageous, but which create a sense of thrilling possibility: clothes like permission slips to think out of the box. And also because in Seán McGirr’s debut at Alexander McQueen, a house that once did all of the above, it got so very garbled. A McQueen MisstepMr. McGirr had the complicated job of taking over from Sarah Burton, the longtime deputy to Mr. McQueen, who had stabilized the brand after the designer’s suicide in 2010 and made it her own, adding a touch of grace to the angry romance and soaring imagination that traversed heaven and earth and that, combined with great technical proficiency, defined the McQueen name.

CNN —Victoria Beckham’s Paris Fashion Week show was disrupted by animal rights activists as they joined her models on the catwalk to protest her brand’s use of animal products such as leather. Protesters in white vests reading “turn your back on animal skins” and “animals aren’t fabric” walked along models on the runway on Friday, holding signs reading “Viva vegan leather,” before being escorted away by security. Animal rights group Peta said that although Beckham’s brand has banned the use of fur and exotic skins in its collections, it still uses leather, including calfskin. “No garment or accessory is worth violently slaughtering and skinning a sensitive and intelligent animal,” PETA Vice President for Europe Mimi Bekhechi said in a statement. Her autumn/winter 2024 collection showcased styles including sheer dresses, garments with sculpted curved hems and necklines, and boxy blazers.

CNN —Celebrities, editors and designers are congregating in Paris this week for the hotly anticipated Spring-Summer 2024 collections at Haute Couture Fashion Week, which showcases the industry’s most elite and decadent looks — both on and off the catwalks. The week kicked off on Schiaparelli’s runway, and the stars were out in full force. Also in attendance, Jennifer Lopez commanded attention in an elaborate petaled white coat, paired with opulent surrealist-style gold eyebrow glasses and chunky golden jewelry.
